trick-or-treat smell my feet…

October 31, 2009

Anyone who knows me, knows I love holidays. Any holiday will do. St. Patrick’s Day, President’s Day, you name it. I think it’s my love for themes and traditions. I love that there are days where you can just dress head-to-toe in green and nobody will look at you funny or days where the pancakes are shaped like hearts and eating lots of chocolate is socially acceptable. Halloween is no exception; the pumpkin carving, seed roasting, chili eating, costume wearing, trick-or-treating holiday. Like most times in my life, my love of tradition collides (or mates, depending on how you want to look at it) with my love of being different. i.e. I can’t just carve a regular old, triangular eyed, missing toothed jack-o-lantern. Brandon shares this love of carving completely random things into pumpkins and the past few years we have carvedĀ  flowers, random words, McDonald’s french fries and soda, the face that turned into John McCain (no, I did not vote for him and to answer your next thought, no, I did not vote for Obama), to this year, where not only did we carve our non-jack-o-lanterned face pumpkins, but we used white pumpkins. We fell in love with them at the grocery store this year, but the $6 price tag did not sit well with us so we said our good-byes and walked away. However, because of us being procrastinators and waiting until two days before Halloween to get our pumpkins we went back and were able to score them for $3. Gotta love a good end-of-the-holiday bargain!

Here’s to not having smashed pumpkins and a t.p. free tree in the morning, and finding the house that gives away the king-size candy bars! I’m going to enjoy the day decked out in orange and black, rocking my plastic ring shaped like a spider. Happy Halloween all.

(Pumpkin carving tip: Sprinkle cinnamon on the lid of the pumpkin for a delightful aroma every time you light the candle inside!)
